Dan Ellis and Pekka Rinne were sharp in their final tune-up before the start of the regular season and the Preds goaltending tandem turned aside 35 shots at Carolina on Sunday afternoon, a 2-0 Hurricanes win over the Predators.
Rinne started the game and stopped all nine shots he faced. Ellis took over to start the second period and made 26 saves.
Ray Whitney scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period, picking up the rebound off Patrick Eaves initial shot. Ellis turned aside the first three quality chances on Carolina's flurry, but was unable to get to Whitney on the rebound chance.
Eric Staal added an empty net goal with four seconds remaining in the game to seal the Carolina win.
The Preds line of Jason Arnott-JP Dumont-Patric Hornqvist combined for eight of Nashville's 31 shots on goal. The line accounted for 24 shots on goal in their two preseason games together.
The Predators return to action on Friday (Oct. 10) when the open the regular season at St. Louis. Nashville's home opener is one night later (Oct. 11) against the Dallas Stars.
