NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Edmonton Oilers found the secret to beating the Nashville Predators, keep scoring on the power play.
The Oilers cashed in on three of six chances, including their last three goals Saturday night, and defeated the Predators 5-1 - sending Nashville to its first regulation loss of the season.
Edmonton's penalty killing was just as strong. The Oilers held the Predators to just one goal in seven short-handed situations.
``All of the areas of the game that looked weak for us before were strong,'' Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. ``Our goaltender was great. The power play was good. The penalty killing was sharp. It was a reversal of fortune for us.''
Ales Hemsky scored a power-play goal and added three assists for the Oilers. His man-advantage goal in the second period was his first of the season in 12 games.
``It was a huge game for all of us,'' Hemsky said. ``It was great for our confidence.''
Jussi Markkanen made 23 saves to backstop the offense.
``The atmosphere, and the way we fought for every puck, was unbelievable,'' Markkanen said. ``It was a big difference in the way we play, but we still have a lot of work to do.''
Nashville started the season 8-0 before falling in overtime at Columbus on Wednesday night. The Predators now have a two-game losing streak after falling for the first time at home in six games (5-1).
``Our power play is effective in getting chances, but not that effective in scoring goals,'' Predators coach Barry Trotz said. ``Edmonton is looking to shoot on the power play. They attack the net until they are successful. We are working very hard on our power play, but it is feast or famine for us.''
The Oilers were pleased with the hard work they displayed in the dominating victory. The Predators weren't able to say the same thing about their approach.
``We were getting beat one-on-one,'' goalie Tomas Vokoun said. ``You've got to do your job. We didn't do our jobs. The effort just wasn't there.''
The Predators took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Martin Erat snapped off a wrist shot from the middle of the right circle to beat Markkanen to his glove side at 3:15 on the power play.
Edmonton tied it eight minutes in. Hemsky fired a shot from short range on a breakaway that sent goalie Vokoun sprawling to the ice to stop. The puck bounced off Vokoun, and the rebound was put in by Ryan Smyth.
In the second period, the Oilers took a 2-1 lead on a breakaway by Marc-Andre Bergeron. The puck went behind Vokoun, who was laying on the ice, before finding its way into the net.
Hemsky scored his first goal of the season at 12:43 to give Edmonton a 3-1 advantage. He fired a wrist shot from the center of the left circle that went high to Vokoun's stick side.
The Predators, who came into the game outscoring their opponents 11-4 in the third period, were shut down in the final 20 minutes.
``I wanted a sense of desperation going into the third period,'' Trotz said. ``Our resilience was not acceptable. I was more disappointed in that than anything else.''
The Oilers scored their fourth goal on the power play at 11:42 of the third period. Raffi Torres passed the puck to his left from low in the slot to Jarrett Stoll, who put the puck by Vokoun.
``Their fourth goal really sank us,'' Trotz said. ``We had a lot of chances, especially early, but we didn't capitalize.''
Steve Staios made it 5-1 with his first goal of the season, scored during a power play in the final minute of the game.
``We didn't cover the slot,'' Vokoun said. ``A lot of goals were off of rebounds or passes in front of the net. We have been on the fortunate side a few times this season, but you can't think any game is going to be an easy game.''
