The Preds and Carolina Hurricanes met once during the 2009-10 regular season, a 4-2 Preds win in Nashville on January 7. After the Hurricanes opened the scoring early in the first period, the Predators responded with four consecutive goals. J-P Dumont scored shorthanded with 6:15 left in the opening frame to tie game and Patric Hornqvist put the Preds ahead for good with a power-play tally at the 19:36 mark of Period 1. Steve Sullivan made the score 3-1 with 1:10 remaining in the second period, the eventual game-winning goal. Hornqvist added his second power-play goal of the night in the middle of the third period. Pekka Rinne made 25 saves in net for the win.

Nashville and Carolina also met twice last preseason. The road team won both contests, with the Preds picking up a 4-2 win in Raleigh on Sept. 18 and the Hurricanes posting a 5-2 win in Nashville on Sept. 26.
