2014 NHL Draft Prospects Profiles: William Nylander\t

William Nylander

Birthplace:
 Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Date of Birth/Age: May 1, 1996 (18)

Current Team: MODO (Swedish Hockey League)

Position: Center/ Right Wing

Height: 5-11

Weight: 181 pounds

One of the top European players in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft is Swedish forward William Nylander. Described by most scouts as the most talented player in the draft, Nylander is an offensive weapon with blinding speeding, smooth hands and a great shot.
Nylander is the son of former NHL and Swedish national-team player Michael Nylander. Born in Calgary, in the midst of his father’s career with the Flames, Nylander grew up playing minor hockey in various parts of North America. Instead of pursuing a major junior or college career in Canada or the United States Nylander chose to return to Sweden in 2011 when his father retired from the NHL.

In 2012, Nylander spent time with the Swedish team Södertälje, competing with three of their junior teams at various levels of competition. He also won a silver medal that year with Sweden at the Under-18 World Junior Championship in Russia scoring two goals (2g-1a-3pts) in five games.

The following year, Nylander made the jump to the Swedish Elite League with MODO, and recorded seven points in 22 games as a 17-year-old. He returned to the Under-18 World Junior Championship in 2014. Despite a disappointing fourth place finish for the Swedes, Nylander was selected as the best forward in the tournament, leading all players in assists and points (6g-10a-16pts).

Nylander’s style of play has drawn comparisons to Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner. At the age of 22, Skinner is already a two-time 30-goal scorer for the Hurricanes.

Nylander is signed to play with MODO again next season. Despite his possible delayed debut in the NHL the experience of playing in the top professional league in Sweden should allow him to make a smooth transition into the NHL.

Scout’s Comments:
“William exudes confidence when he plays. Exceptional poise with the puck and is always looking to make threatening plays in the offensive zone. Excellent skater who is very difficult to check because of his agility and because he is always changing pace. Can make pinpoint passes in traffic and if you are his line mate, best be ready, as he will provide opportunities. Top line type player.”- Craig Button, TSN Director of Scouting
