For 17-year-old Kasperi Kapanen, hockey is more than a game or a future career, it’s a family business. Kasperi is the son of former NHL All-Star Sami Kapanen and grandson of former professional and Olympic hockey standout Hannu Kapanen.

Kasperi has been ranked as the top European skater by most scouting services and is coming off a seven-goal, 14-point season with KalPa, a team in Finland’s top professional league.

Kasperi plays alongside his father, Sami, who is also the majority owner and general manager of KalPa.

“It's pretty incredible,” Kapanen said in an interview with NHL.com. “I can't describe what it feels like to see him every day on the ice and be on the ice with him. When we're on the ice I see him as a teammate, but when we go home and eat dinner I see him as a father.”

While Kapanen has looked impressive with KalPa, where he’s really excelled is on the international stage. At the 2013 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Russia, he was second among all players in the tournament with five goals, including the game winner in the Bronze Medal Game. Kapanen also participated in the 2014 Under-18 World Championship picking up a goal and an assist in five games. He is a strong candidate to make Finland’s 2015 World Junior Championship team after missing the 2014 edition with a shoulder injury. Finland Head Coach Karri Kivi has mentioned that he has been really impressed with his talent and competiveness saying, “It goes in the family.”

Returning to Philadelphia for the Draft on June 27 will be a homecoming of sorts for Kapanen, who spent his youth growing up around the Flyers locker room while his dad played there from 2002-08. Kapanen claims that the Flyers are his favorite NHL team. Former Flyers forwards Mike Richards and Jeff Carter are also two of Kapanen’s favorite players.

On the ice the younger Kapanen compares more favorably to speedy Islanders youngster Kyle Okposo, who was just shy of a 30-goal season in his first full year in New York. Yes, Kapanen is undersized but he makes up for it with his quick shot, skating ability and high hockey IQ. He is a lock to be drafted early in the first round.

Scout’s Comments:

“He’s a good skating wing and can also play center. He has a smooth and surprisingly fast style that has surprised many unsuspecting defensemen. His tricky puck skills and quick release have paid off in many games and he has good hand-eye coordination. He’s not overly physical, but does not shy away from rough situations.” Goran Stubb, Central Scouting Director of European Scouting
