2014 World Juniors: Preds Prospect Showdown
2014 World Juniors: Preds Prospect Showdown

On Saturday afternoon, Finland and Sweden took to the ice at Malmo Arena in the second game for both squads at the 2014 World Juniors.

The Finnish and Swedish teams boast five of the six Preds prospects playing in this year’s tournament. Finland has forward Saku Maenalanen, defenseman Mikko Vainonen and goalies Janne Juvonen and Juuse Saros, while the Swedes are captained by forward Filip Forsberg.

It was Forsberg who stole the show on Saturday, as the host team downed the Finns, 4-2. Forsberg posted an assist on the day, connecting with his roommate and former Leksand teammate, Jacob de la Rose, for the game-winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in the second period. The assist gives the 19-year-old four points (1g-3a) in Sweden’s first two outings.

For the Finns, Maenalanen and Vainonen were held scoreless in the contest, while goaltender Juuse Saros served as back-up after defeating Norway on Friday.

Both Forsberg (1g-3a) and Maenalanen (2g-1a) rank among the tournament’s Top 10 players in scoring thus far.

In other World Junior action, the United States defeated Slovakia, 6-3, earlier on Saturday. Nashville prospect Zach Stepan was held out of the contest after suffering a lower-body injury in Team USA’s opening game on Thursday – he remains day-to-day according USA Hockey.
