Nashville Predators Road Trip Blog: Game Day in Phoenix

Good afternoon from Glendale.

It’s game day in Phoenix and the boys look ready to go after a good morning skate. The mood was light and the guys had some jump in their step. Roman Josi was on the ice, working with Kevin Klein as the second defensive pairing and also on the second power-play unit, so it looks as if Josi may make his return to the lineup tonight.

Now we’re back at the hotel to rest up before the big tilt tonight. Our hotel, the Renaissance Glendale, is right across the street from the arena, so it’s a quick transition to-and-from the rink. But the blue-ish glow from the Jobing.com Arena sign kept my room pretty well lit last night even with the shades closed… well played Phoenix, well played.

If anyone ever comes out to Phoenix for a game, I’d highly recommend staying at this hotel, simply because of the location. As I said before, the arena is right across the street, University of Phoenix Stadium (where the Arizona Cardinals play) is also within walking distance and the Westgate Entertainment District has anything you would need on a short stay. It’s basically an outdoor mall with several different restaurants, bars and shops. The only downside… we’re 30-40 minutes from the airport.

Last night was a pretty low-key evening. After checking into the hotel and relaxing for a little bit, I joined members of the broadcasting crew for dinner at Yard House in the entertainment district.

Yard House is a brew pub style restaurant that has more than 100 adult libations on-tap and it boasts a pretty lengthy menu as well. And while I told myself I was going to try to eat healthy on this trip, the Chicken Mac N’ Cheese jumped off the menu at me, and there went my healthy eating plan. I’m a sucker for Mac N’ Cheese, always have been, always will be.

As the eight of us sat at the table, with the World Series on the in background, polishing off our meals and a couple of frosty glasses, I was able to hear a bunch of different stories from Stu Grimson, Willy Daunic and the rest of them FOX Sports Tennessee production staff. Me, being the newbie, I just sat back and listened. I have a lot to learn about life on the road and, let’s be honest, my list of stories is short and undistinguished. We also discussed some of the recent NHL, NFL and MLB happenings.

As most of the broadcasting crew called it a night, I swapped tables to sit with some of the hockey and training staff as the Red Sox were on the verge of clinching their third World Series title in nine years, or whatever it is – I’m a Tigers fan and could really care less. We have a couple of “wicked huge” Sox fans on our staff and they were pretty fired up about the win.

After dinner it was back to the hotel to get some sleep (or try to in my case), it’s going to be a big day today.

Happy Halloween,

JR
