Milwaukee Closes Out The 2012-13 Preseason With Sights Set On Grand Rapids

The Preds primary developmental club, the Milwaukee Admirals, concluded their pre-season slate with a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Wolves this past Saturday at the Kern Center on the campus of the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

After a scoreless opening frame, Chicago got on the board early in the second, as former Admiral Mark Matheson tallied first at 8:13 and then just 1:33 later Jordan Schroeder made it 2-0 Wolves. Schroeder would add another at 16:24 to stake Chicago to a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes.

The Admirals finally found the back of the net in the third period when Ben Ryan, a 2007 fourth-round pick, jumped on a loose puck in front of the Chicago crease and jammed it home. Jack MacLellan and Andre Bouvet-Morrisette picked up the assists on the play.

Magnus Hellberg made the start for the Admirals and stopped 10 of 12 shots he faced, while Jeremy Smith came on half-way through the game and made five saves on six shots.

The Admirals opened the 2012-13 preseason just two nights earlier as the Rockford Icehogs, the Chicago Blackhawks AHL club, battled back to defeat the Ads in the shootout.

Milwaukee jumped out to an early lead as Jani Lajunen found the back of the net just 7:30 into the opening period. The goal was a Finnish connection as it was set up by Juuso Puustinen and Joonas Jarvinen. Eight minutes later while on the power play, defenseman Anthony Bitetto’s shot was deflected by Puustinen and driven home by Daniel Bang to give the Ads the 2-0 lead.

Marcus Kruger cut Milwaukee’s lead in half as he beat Jeremy Smith at 6:23 mark of the middle frame . Then, while the Admirals were down two men, Ben Smith knotted the game up at two after a scramble in front of Magnus Hellberg – who played in his first professional game on North American soil.

Neither squad was able to break the stalemate during the third period, nor the five minutes of overtime, as the game went to a shootout. Puustinen and Taylor Beck both tallied for Milwaukee in the post-overtime tiebreaker, but Rockford netted goals on all three of their attempts to down the Ads, 3-2.
