Instant Analysis: Jon Blum Contract

The signing of defenseman Jonathon Blum wraps up the last item on Nashville’s offseason “to do” list – he was the final player in the organization to sign a contract for the 2012-13 season. The Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., native will most likely in a battle for the sixth/seventh defenseman spot during training camp, looking to regain his form from the 2011 playoffs after a down season in 2011-12. With Shea Weber, Roman Josi, Kevin Klein, Hal Gill and Scott Hannan anticipated to hold down the top-five positions, Blum, along with Ryan Ellis, Mattias Ekholm and Victor Bartley – who are all on two-way contracts – will look to stick with the parent club.

Blum certainly did his part this summer to show he’s committed to taking the steps necessary to be an NHL player. After being criticized in the past for his lack of conditioning, Blum spent the majority of the offseason in Nashville training daily with Strength and Conditioning Coach David Good and utilizing all the team’s resources to ensure he’s played his last game at the AHL level.
