Preds Foundation Helps Support Fannie Battle Day Home

By: Jessica Pyles, Nashville Predators Community Relations

Fannie Battle Day Home for Children is the second oldest childcare center in the United States. Their mission is to provide affordable high-quality child care for at-risk children in a nurturing environment while empowering families to reach their potential. They are a 2012-2013 Predators Foundation Grant recipient.

They offer infant, toddler, preschool, Pre-K, and school-age programs for 96-105 children (ages 6 weeks-12 years during the summer), and are a Metro Nashville Public Schools Community-Based Pre-K Program during the school year. Fees for childcare are set on a sliding scale according to income, and parents are required to be working, in school, or in a job training program.

Fannie Battle offers a variety of programs during the summer including sending children to Camps Oak Hill and Whippoorwill (which the Predators Foundation was happy to support), First Baptist VBS, Academic and Math Enrichment, Literacy Club, Art Camp, Swimming lessons, graffiti/airbrush art camp, Hope Clinic, Hip Hop Dance classes, song writing and guitar lessons, cooking lessons, and a Dental Clinic.

Ninety percent of Fannie Battle’s families are classified as low income, 56% live in public housing, 94% qualify for free or reduced lunches, and 89% of them are from single parent homes. Fannie Battle works in conjunction with the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), which helps provide them with food to serve to the kids three times a day for their breakfast, lunch, and snack.

Fannie Battle Day Home for Children is primarily supported by external support: 50% of their financial support comes from donations, 35% comes from government subsidies, and only 15% comes from parent fees.
