Instant Analysis: Chris Mason Contract

Sunday, 07.01.2012 / 5:55 PM / Features
By Jay Levin  - Nashville Predators

The Preds have agreed to terms with goaltender Chris Mason, giving the team a reliable – and familiar – option to share the crease with Pekka Rinne for the 2012-13 season. Mason and Rinne have been teammates in the past and know each other. Mason is a good fit in the Preds locker room. Mason and Preds goalie coach Mitch Korn have a strong working relationship. Beyond all of that, Mason is a very capable goalie. He posted a combined 21-20-4 record the last two seasons with Winnipeg/Atlanta – the Jets/Thrashers were one game under .500 (50-51-18) in the games he didn’t start over that same two year span. And Mason is just three years removed from a 30-win season with the St. Louis Blues.

With Pekka Rinne entrenched as one of the elite netminders in the world, if the Preds can get .500 play out of their No. 2 goalie – remember Lindback was 5-8-0 in 13 decisions this past season – then the team is in a strong position to challenge for another 100-point season; above .500 play from the No. 2 goalie and the team should be right in the mix for the division title.
