This Weekend At The World Championships

Craig Smith and the Kostistyn Brothers all got on the scoreboard, while Martin Erat continued his strong play in action this weekend at the 2012 World Championships. Coming out of the weekend, Smith & Team USA and Patric Hornqvist & Team Sweden have secured spots in the Quarterfinals Round, while Erat & Team Czech Republic and Antti Pihlstrom & Team Finland are in strong position to secure spots in the Quarterfinals.

Smith picked up an assist on Bobby Ryan's goal in Team USA's 5-0 win over Team Finland on Sunday. The US improved to 5-1-0 (13pts), with a one point lead on Finland and Slovakia (12pts) for second place in the Helskinki Group. The US closes out Group Play on Tuesday against Switzerland.

Roman Josi and Switzerland were eliminated from Quarterfinals contention with a pair of regulation losses this weekend, 4-2 to France on Saturday and 1-0 to Slovakia on Sunday. Josi skated 17:51 on Saturday and 18:54 on Sunday.

Erat, meanwhile, earned Player of the Game honors for Czech Republic in the Czechs 2-0 loss to Russia on Sunday. Czech Republic is 4-2-0 (11pts) for third place in the Stockholm Group. The Czechs close out Group Play with a match-up against Germany on Tuesday.

Patric Hornqvist made his tournament debut for Sweden on Saturday, a 4-0 win over Italy to secure a spot in the Quarterfinals. The Swedes improved to 5-1-0 (15pts) in the tournament, good for second place in the Stockholm Group. Sweden closes Group Play on Tuesday against Latvia.

Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn also made their tournament debuts this weekend for Belarus. They both picked up assists in Belarus' 5-1 loss to Slovakia on Saturday. The Belarusians are 1-4-0 (3pts) in this year's tournament with two games remaining in Group Play, Monday against France and Tuesday against Canada.
