Goc Signs On For Additional Year

Goc, 26, has already set a career high in goals (10) in 49 games this season, and is just three points shy (10g-9a) of a personal-best in points attained during his rookie season of 2005-06 (8g-14a). The 6-1, 202-pound center paces the Predators in face-off winning percentage (51.5 percent) while playing 14:08 per game, and has produced 16 points (8g-8a) in his last 25 outings after starting the season with three points (2g-1a) in his first 24 contests of 2009-10. Named to his third straight German Olympic Team on Dec. 30, Goc is the highest German ever selected in the NHL Draft (20th overall in 2001 by San Jose).

The Calw native has played 314 career games with Nashville and San Jose since 2005-06, posting 73 points (29g-44a) and 84 penalty minutes. Goc has also seen action in 37 playoff games (3g-5a-8pts), and made his NHL debut during the 2004 postseason.

On re-signing Goc for next season...
"When we signed Marcel this summer our hopes were he could be a replacement for a Scott Nichol or Vern Fiddler – play third or fourth line and kill penalties. I think it’s safe to say he’s well exceeded our expectations. He’s played higher in the lineup than we had anticipated. He has produced more offensively than he has ever done before and he’s been one of our top penalty killers and one of our most consistent guys on faceoffs. It’s hard to believe he’s only 26 years of age seeing how long he’s been around the NHL. Everybody starts developing or reaching their full potential at different ages and we just got Marcel at the right time. It seems like it’s been a good fit for Marcel and it’s been a good fit for us."

On Goc's development this season...
“I’ve seen his confidence rise. In San Jose he was used primarily as a fourth line player and will all due respect, San Jose had a top club and he probably never got the ice time and opportunity that he’s received with us this season. He’s been able to grab the bull by the horns and a lot of things have started to be fulfilled by him. I think it’s important to remember that he was a first round pick. Your expectations as a first round pick are pretty high. Coming over from Europe, things early on were probably a little different for him. But I think he’s feeling good about himself and I see his star rising.”
