Ryan Ellis to Captain Team OHL in Super Series Games

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Canadian Hockey League and SUBWAY® today announced the players that will represent Team OHL as Captains and Assistants during the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series games to be played in Barrie on Thursday November 19 and in Windsor on Monday November 23, 2009.

Ryan Ellis of the Windsor Spitfires will serve as Captain for Team OHL for both games of the series with Stefan Della Rovere of the Barrie Colts and Nazem Kadri of the London Knights named assistant captains for both games. In addition to Della Rovere and Kadri, defenceman Tyler Cuma of the Ottawa 67’s will wear the “A” for Team OHL in game three of the series in Barrie while defenceman Cameron Gaunce of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors will fulfill that role for game four of the series in Windsor.

Ellis, an 18-year-old from Freelton, ON, represented Team Canada winning gold at the 2009 World Junior Hockey Championships in Ottawa last winter. The reigning OHL Defenceman of the Year was selected in the first round, 11th overall by the Nashville Predators at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Ellis has been limited to just 13 games in this his third season with the Spitfires and has recorded 13 assists.

Della Rovere, a 19-year-old from Maple, ON, competed with Ellis last season as a member of Canada’s gold medal winning team after an impressive performance at the 2008 Canada/Russia Challenge. The Colts’ Captain has 17 points in 19 games this season.

Kadri, a 19-year-old from London, ON, is tied for the team-lead in points with 19 through 19 games as an Assistant Captain with the Knights. He was selected in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, seventh overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Cuma, a 19-year-old from Bowmanville, ON, is a an Assistant Captain with the 67’s and is a Minnesota Wild draft pick selected 23rd overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Gaunce, a 19-year-old from Markham, ON, was selected 50th overall in 2008 by the Colorado Avalanche and serves as Captain for the Majors.

The SUBWAY ® Super Series is an important part of the selection process for both Russia and Canada’s National Junior Team before their final evaluation camps for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships held this winter in Saskatoon and Regina. Canada will be competing for a record sixth straight gold medal while Russia has medaled in each of the past five tournaments with two straight bronze medal victories.

The 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series is supported by CHL associate sponsors, Bank of Montreal, NeilMed, and CCM, and will be broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet with the two QMJHL games on RDS.
