Preds Offense vs. Chris Osgood
A lot of attention has been focused on Detroit’s goaltending this season. Future Hall of Famer Dominik Hasek retired at the end of last season, placing Chris Osgood and free agent signee Ty Conklin in the spotlight – trying to backstop the star-studded defending Stanley Cup champs.
While Osgood was the playoff hero for the Wings last year, he entered this season having played just 64 regular season games the past two seasons combined. Conklin had played 49 during the same stretch.
Last season the Red Wings led the league in goaltending with a 2.18 goals against average. This season Detroit has slipped to 21st in the league with a 2.91 goals against average. In the past Osgood has shown the ability to step up his game in the playoffs, but he’s still surrendered three-or-more goals in 11 of his 20 appearances since the All-Star Break.
With rookie netminder Pekka Rinne ranking among the NHL leaders in goals against average, save percentage, and shutouts, the Preds have had success when providing him with offensive support. When scoring at least three goals, the Preds have posted a 27-6-2 record, including a 13-1-1 mark since the All-Star Break.
