Blum, Wilson Post Multi-Point Games in USA Loss

Preds prospects Jonathon Blum and Colin Wilson both posted multi-point games, but Slovakia scored on five of its 19 shots to beat Team USA 5-3 in the Quarterfinal Round of the World Junior Championships. Slovakia advances to the Semifinals to face Sweden, while USA will face the Czech Republic on Jan. 4 in the fifth-place game.

Team USA out shot Slovakia 47-19 on the game, but gave up goals on its first two shots against to fall behind 2-1 and were unable to recover. The US had a chance to take the lead 55 seconds into the game when Jordan Schroeder was awarded a penalty shot, but Jaroslav Janus denied the attempt to keep the game scoreless. The Slovaks scored at the 11:05 mark to go up 1-0. The US tied the score 56 seconds later on Ian Cole's power-play goal, triggered by Colin Wilson with the primary assist.

Slovakia netted a pair of goals late in the period to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. The US fired 16 shots on goal in the middle frame, but were unable to sneak one past Janus.

The US pulled within one 5:41 into the third period on Blum's second goal in as many games, a power-play goal with Wilson again picking up the primary assist on the play, Wilson's eighth point of the tournament. Slovakia scored a rebound goal midway through the period to rebuild a two-goal lead and then added an empty net score with 2:14 left to play. James vanRiemsdyk scored with 1:18 left in regulation to close out the scoring, with Blum notching an assist on the play.
