|In this circumstance it made sense for the organization to expose Ortmeyer to waivers and take the risk he could have been claimed by another NHL club rather than send him to Milwaukee on a conditioning assignment.
Conditioning assignments -- which are commonly used for players returning from injury -- are AHL assignments for a pre-established period of time, not longer than two-weeks in duration. Since Ortmeyer missed the past six months, including all of training camp, he may need more than two weeks worth of games and practices at the AHL level in order to work his way back to NHL game-shape.
Additionally, any player assigned to the AHL on a conditioning assignment remains on the NHL club's 23-man active roster. Had Ortmeyer been assigned on a conditioning stint, he would have required a sport on the Preds 23-man roster while he was on the assignment and the Predators would have been maxed out on the 23-man roster. With the regular assignment, Ortmeyer does not count toward the 23-man roster, leaving the Predators with the flexibility to make a move should a situation arise.

Ortmeyer’s assignment coincides with his activation from Nashville’s non-roster list. The 6-0, 188-pound right wing has not played since sustaining a knee injury on Feb. 23, 2008. In his first season with the Predators in 2007-08, the Omaha, Neb., native played in 51 games, recording four goals and four assists.
The Predators (12-10-2) return to action tomorrow night when they host the Colorado Avalanche (12-12-0) at the Sommet Center (7 p.m. CT). Tickets to this and all Predators home games may be purchased online at nashvillepredators.com, in addition to the Sommet Center box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, or by calling (615) 770-PUCK.
