Predators Award October Hockey Recognition to Muhsman of NYHL and Thompson of Youth, Inc.
The Nashville Predators introduce the fourth season of a program to recognize players and volunteers in the Nashville area who demonstrate character skills that make youth hockey a better experience for all involved. The Nashville Predators will recognize a Youth Hockey Player of the Month and a Youth Hockey Volunteer of the Month each month during the 2008-09 regular hockey season.

During a ceremony held prior to the Nashville Predators’ October 30 home game against the Edmonton Oilers, the Predators organization announced that Timothy Muhsman and Marty Thompson were named Youth Hockey Player and Youth Hockey Volunteer of the Month, respectively, for October. Muhsman and Thompson were presented with a plaque recognizing their efforts on behalf of the Predators during the ceremony. The two were nominated and selected as part of a Predators hockey development initiative that will regularly recognize a player and volunteer in the Nashville area.

Muhsman, October Player of the Month, is 14, and plays forward for the So. Flyers Bantam AA team, which is part of the Nashville Youth Hockey League (NYHL) that plays at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville. At age 7 Muhsman began playing inline hockey and now enters his second season of ice hockey. As a child, his dad Duane took him to try out hockey at the old Mt. Juliet Roller Rink. After a little hesitation, Muhsman took to the game and hasn’t stopped since. Last season Muhsman transitioned over to ice hockey and quickly found his skill level to be on par with travel ice hockey.

With seven years of hockey experience, Muhsman has learned the character trait of selflessness and leadership, which is demonstrated by his play. According to his inline coach Tim Haller, “Timothy has faith in all his teammates and demonstrates his unselfish play by leading the league in assists."

This season, Muhsman is a freshman at Wilson Central and plays for their high school hockey team. With his hectic hockey schedule, Muhsman also volunteers working with younger hockey players. His passion for the sport is contagious for his dad, Duane, who serves in many volunteer roles within the hockey community. His love for the game, leadership qualities and volunteer efforts are the reasons the Nashville Predators has recognized Timothy Muhsman as the October Youth Hockey Player!

The Nashville Predators are also proud to have named Marty Thompson as the October Youth Hockey Volunteer. Thompson is the Coach for the 8U, 10U, 12U and 16U teams, which are part of the Youth, Inc. Inline Hockey League that plays at Veteran’s Park in LaVergne. In addition, Thompson coached the TN Inferno 8-and-under inline hockey travel team.
Thompson grew up playing pond hockey in Northern Pennsylvania. Upon moving to Nashville a few years ago, his three sons got involved in hockey and in turn four years ago he began coaching inline hockey. He enjoys coaching because he believes “hockey is the greatest sport; it’s not like other sports – it’s more physical and challenges a kid think more than other sports."

Thompson was nominated by a parent of one of the many kids his coaches, Lee Ann Fields. According to Lee Ann, “Thompson is an awesome coach and dedicated to teaching the sport to as many young kids as possible. He relentlessly and patiently gives his time, because he truly loves the sport. Shown through his demeanor, he respects each and every child he coaches.”

Thompson’s’ commitment to youth hockey has been tireless. He devotes countless hours to the betterment of all levels of youth hockey. Thompson is a coach full of memorable stories of kids he has impacted through the sport and for this, the Nashville Predators have recognized him as the October Youth Hockey Volunteer!
