Several burning questions have been raised by local and national media as Predators dive into the 2007-08 season. The largest and most-asked of them all is - who will fill in the offensive holes left vacant by departed forwards Paul Kariya, Scott Hartnell, and injured winger Steve Sullivan?

On Day 1 of 2007 Training Camp at the Sommet Center, a day jam packed with testing, photo shoots, physicals and meetings, Head Coach Barry Trotz took a few minutes to address who the primary candidates to fill these roles will be starting tomorrow morning when the team hits the ice bright and early at Centennial Sportsplex.

On the development of David Legwand…

“I think when you reach a certain level, you have to continue to build on that level, and I think that is something that David will strive for, and hopefully he will take his game to that next level. Once he gets to that level, then we will really see what he is capable of. He is still a young player – we talk about young goaltenders finding themselves, and it usually happens in that 25 to 26-year-old range. Sometimes it is that way with a player, and David is at that ideal age where he is experienced, skilled, fast, and has the elements to keep developing into a real good player.”

On filling spots on the top-two forward lines…

“Marty Gelinas is a really good two-way player, just as Fiddler is. Those are two of the guys we will look at early for stepping into that offensive role. I also want to see what Jed Ortmeyer can do in that role, or maybe Radek Bonk. We still have to find out what those guys are capable of. One of the things we might do is play Radek and Jed together to see if there is chemistry and to find out about their games. But I think the primary veterans who could see time in offensive role are Fiddler and Gelinas.”

On developing affective line combinations…

“You look at some of the great lines and it isn’t necessarily three guys meshing together as much as maybe just two guys. You look at Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier with Clark Gilles or some other guys with the Islanders (dynasties of the 1980s) or Wayne Gretzky with Jari Kurri – they kept moving that one guy. I think if you can find chemistry between two players you can find another guy to complement them. That third guy can be an enhancer to it.”
