NHL reschedules Preds-Wings game
Nashville, Tenn. (December 2, 2005) - The National Hockey League announced the following changes to the 2005-06 NHL schedule as a result of the postponement of the November 21 Nashville Predators-Detroit Red Wings game at Joe Louis Arena:
- The Predators-Red Wings game scheduled for Monday, January 23 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center will now be played at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena (6:30 p.m. CT) and serve as the "make-up" date for the November 21 game. Nashville will now play back-to-back games in Detroit on Monday, January 23 and Tuesday, January 24.
- The Predators and Red Wings will now play on Thursday, March 30 (7:00 p.m.) at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
The January 23 Predators-Red Wings game will be replayed for a full 60 minutes of regulation time plus any potential overtime and shootout. However, the game will begin with Nashville holding a 1-0 advantage (as the Predators did when the November 21 game was postponed).
"We recognize the unfortunate circumstances that led to the decision to suspend play on November 21 at the Joe Louis Arena," said Predators General Manager David Poile. "Jiri Fischer's recovery remains in our thoughts.
"We support the League's resolution. It is a fair decision that recognizes the efforts of the teams in the November 21 game."
"In reaching a determination as to how best to deal with this unique and extraordinary set of circumstances, our first consideration was fairness to our fans. We did not think it fair to ask them to come out again for only 47 minutes of regulation hockey," said Colin Campbell, NHL Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations. "However, in light of the circumstances that led to the termination of play on Nov. 21, and after consultation with both teams, we have decided that the rescheduled contest will begin with the Predators ahead, 1-0. A goal will be credited to Greg Johnson, with assists to Ryan Suter and Scottie Upshall. All other statistics will be expunged."
The Central Division rival Predators and Red Wings will now face off five times between January 6 and February 9 (three in Detroit, two in Nashville) and three times between March 21 and the end of the 2005-06 regular season (two in Nashville, one in Detroit).
"Making one road trip to Detroit to play two games instead of two separate trips will be beneficial travel-wise for our players, especially in a condensed season," added Poile. "Meanwhile, adding a home game at the end of March may help us in the stretch run."
Details on changes to the Predators' broadcast schedule will be made available when finalized.
