2014 NHL Draft Prospects Profiles

Nikolaj Ehlers

Birthplace: Aalborg, Denmark

Date of Birth/Age: Feb. 14, 1996 (18 years old)

Current Team: Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL)

Position: Left Wing

Height: 5-11

Weight: 163 pounds

One of the fastest rising prospects in this year’s draft is Denmark’s Nikolaj Ehlers. After playing in the Swiss Elite League with Biel’s Under-17 and junior teams, he was selected by the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in the first round, sixth overall, in the 2013 CHL Import Draft.

Coming into 2013-14 training camp, Halifax had high expectations of Ehlers and a hope that he would be able to help fill the void that Nathan MacKinnon left when he was selected first overall by the Colorado Avalanche in 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Ehlers answered the call and had no trouble transitioning to the North American style of play. He was the league’s fourth-leading scorer, first among rookies, during the regular season (49g-55a-105pts). He also led all rookies in playoff scoring (11g-17a-28pts) and helped lead Halifax to Game Seven of the QMJHL semifinals. Ehlers later became the recipient of the 2013-14 BMO CHL Rookie of the Year Award. He was also awarded the Michael Bossy Trophy, which is awarded annually to the QMJHL’s top professional prospect.

Ehlers has also been a force at the international level as a member of Denmark’s Under-16, Under-18 and junior teams. This past December, Ehlers scored two goals and added four assists as a part of Denmark's gold medal-winning team at the Division 1A World Junior Championship in Poland.

Ehlers has been called a great playmaker with outstanding knowledge of the game, but what separates him from most skaters is his blinding speed. There is a general consensus among scouts that Ehlers is the fastest player in this year’s draft. His speed and playmaking ability have drawn comparisons to past greats such as Pavel Bure and Peter Forsberg and current NHL star Patrick Kane.

Scout’s Comments:

“He's proven to be a skilled forward who can work some magic. He's got that quickness where he can separate from a check and get to the net. He's got soft hands and passes with authority, is a clever playmaker and very unselfish. Most teams are viewing him as a first-round candidate.” – Dan Marr, NHL Director of Central Scouting
