Cross-town Rivals Clash on Ice

Friday, 01.24.2014 / 2:59 PM

Looking to break their winless season, the Pope John Paul II Knights took the ice against their Catholic cross-town rivals, the Father Ryan Irish. It was the Knights’ senior night, and what better way to honor their six seniors than by beating their long-time rival, the Irish?

The Knights came out strong as senior defenseman David Campeotto scored on a slap shot just 40 seconds into the game. The Irish answered nine seconds later as Matt Faulkner deflected a low shot right under goalie Seth Griffith’s pad. Dylan Fitzgerald would score for the Irish a few minutes later, breaking the tie and giving the Irish a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Knights eight penalties in the second and third periods gave the Irish many power play opportunities. Early in the second period, Irish forward Jacob Ellis scored a power play goal to extend the Irish’s lead to two. The Irish made up for their lackluster start by scoring another goal late in the second, to end the period ahead 4-1.

The Knights would score a second tally in the third period, but their comeback bid came a little too late. The Irish forwards threw everything they had on net. Senior forward Riley Smith scored two goals in the third period, solidifying the Irish lead of 6-2.

Knight’s goalie Seth Griffith played a great game, stopping 29 of 35 shots.

The Irish, currently in second place, are one point behind Brentwood in the standings. They look to jump Brentwood Friday night in what promises to be an exciting match-up between two of the top teams in the league.
